PlayStation and Team Asobi have dropped a surprise update for Astro’s Playroom in celebration of the reveal of its full-fledged Astro title, Astro Bot. Japanese YouTubers got to play the PS5, and we even got a better feel for how large the system is. Sony’s bundled platformer is mostly showing you everything the DualSense can do–and it’s pretty impressive. Transcending its role as an introduction to the PS5’s features, Astro’s Playroom is a quick and delightful celebration of PlayStation’s history.
Puzzle Piece 1/4 – Right at the start of the level, cross the tightrope and jump across to reach this puzzle piece. Artifact 1/2 “PS2 Multitap” – Shortly after that puzzle piece there will be an area you can go into on the left behind some purple vines. Light the fuse at the bottom with your ship thrusters to reveal this artifact. Puzzle Piece 3/4 – In the section after the falling circular wall pieces, you need to use the bar to jump up and over the wall to the right to reach this puzzle piece. Puzzle Piece 1/4 – When climbing in the monkey suit, when you go up the first moving handhold there will be a yellow handhold on the left you can grab, which reveals a new area.
Astro Game Series
It’s the foundational software kicking off the next generation of PlayStation gaming. ASOBI Team from Japan Studio could have just phoned it in with a handful of gimmicky levels to distract players while they wait for Miles Morales or Demon’s Souls to download, but they didn’t. They developed a full fun platforming experience that not only demonstrates the PS5, but celebrates 25 years of PlayStation history in some pretty special ways.

I can’t say I had very high expectations for Astro’s Playroom, a game that comes free with every PlayStation 5 console. I figured it might be a cute series of minigames, akin to the robot-themed minigames in the PlayStation 4’s pack-in title, The Playroom. That PS4 game was the sort of thing you boot up once, mess around with for 30 minutes, and then forget it exists. A DLC game in which the player controls a ninja AR Bot, evading traps and firing shuriken.
Jump up the steps and head right to get to the top of the structure and to a line of asteroids (which will be guarded by Spitters and other various enemies). Continue along the thicker beam section (a line of Coins will appear when you do this), and around the corner you’ll find a tiny astronaut toy. From the beginning of the level, follow the wooden path forward through the grass and up to Checkpoint 2. Tug the cables to the left of it to reveal some steps up to the next area. Continue following the wooden path forward to the next wall, defeating three Knockers and a Spiky as you go.
I mentioned this already in my Astro’s Playroom preview, but it really can’t be overstated how innovative the DualSense PS5 Controller is and just how effective Astro’s Playroom is at showing it off. From the opening moments when it teaches you about the adaptive triggers and haptic feedback it never stops impressing all the way until the very end. The final boss is a deep cut reference to a classic PS1 tech demo that you’ll immediately recognize if you’ve been gaming with PlayStation long enough and it was a real treat to experience. Puzzle Piece 1/4 – At the second checkpoint instead of going forward, go to the left and up to a platform where you can find a spot to blow into the mic. Puzzle Piece 3/4 – When you reach the next checkpoint, before going down the ramp, follow the path back to the right where you can hit a small jump which propels you into the air to grab this puzzle piece.
Unfortunately, underneath all the bright and beautiful graphics with charming, engaging world design is a game that welcomes only the players who possess the ability to use all the DualSenses’ features. Astro’s Playroom is a delight and it is free – but physically disabled gamers are sadly not yet welcome in the world of PlayStation. Sony should come out For the Players, and update this game with the accessibility options it direly needs.
Spyro’s wings notably use the inaccurate anatomy present in the original game; later titles gave it correct bat anatomy. In the PlayStation Labo area are two Bots in VR with a third listening to music, with two microphones behind him. The mics reference 2004’s Singstar for the PS2, developed by London Studio. Singstar was a very popular franchise on the PS2, and came packed with blue and red microphones, as referenced in the Labo area. [newline]It’s a reference to Symphony of the Night thanks to the blonde hair. In one of the animations, the Bot will check a clock, referencing how Dracula only returns from the dead every 100 years. TG88 com is a very important game, as it alongside Super Metroid helped establish the Metroidvania genre.
Because the UMD drive was removed, the PSP Go could only play digital games, either downloaded from its PSN Store or transferred via a PlayStation 3. It also coudln’t use the Camera, Microphone or GPS peripherals without an adapter. The EyeToy camera was a webcam that allowed the player to participate in mixed-reality minigames, where their body is able to interact with the games on-screen. This makes it a precursor of sorts to Xbox’s Kinect seven years later. The Network Adapter allowed the PlayStation 2 to connect online for multiplayer, sliding into the Expansion Bay.
Each requires specific actions‚ such as solving riddles or interacting with the environment. While not needed for the Platinum Trophy‚ they add depth and fun‚ celebrating PlayStation history. Completing these unlocks unique achievements and brings you closer to 100% completion‚ making them a great bonus for dedicated players. Boss Fight Trophies in Astro Playroom are unlocked by defeating specific bosses in various levels.
