Sony has announced that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will launch globally for PS5 on 20th October, 2023. After a prolonged period in which the exact date was a mystery, it’s great to finally know when the game is due. Tombstone, another infamous villain, has traded in his leather jacket for a Coney Island carnie’s uniform (and yes, the rides are adorably fun).

Without warning, in seemingly undemanding scenes and without any preceding slowdown, the game simply gives up, citing only nonsensical display driver issues. So far it’s happened about once every 30 minutes, seeming to be more frequent during story missions. Peter reunites with Harry and Mary Jane and attempts to return the suit to Harry, but it refuses to leave him; the three figure they need Connors’ help. While investigating Kraven, Peter discovers that Kraven is dying of cancer and is looking for someone who can give him a “warrior’s death” in combat. Peter manages to retrieve the serum from Kraven, who discovers the exosuit’s weakness to loud noises. After NK88 and Harry synthesize an antidote for Connors, Peter locates him with Miles’ help and eventually defeats and cures him.
Peter chooses to save everyone else, which leads to a tearful goodbye from his loved one. Otto Octavius later turns into Doc Ock and frees Mr. Negative, Electro, Vulture, Rhino and Scorpion to form the Sinister Six. Doc Ock takes the Devil’s breath and releases it in Times Square, also infecting Aunt May. While Mary Jane informs Peter of the location of the cure, Spider-Man is forced to build a new armored suit in order to defeat Doc Ock, who has beaten Spider-Man and taken Osborn and the cure. After struggling to deal with Kingpin in the prequel novel, Spider-Man successfully defeats him at the beginning of the game (don’t worry, he’ll be back, though), which opens up the door for a new crime gang to take over the throne.
Tempted by the power and freedom of his new abilities, Miles must decide what kind of Spider-Man he wants to be. This is an experienced Peter Parker who’s more masterful at fighting big crime in Marvel’s New York. At the same time, he’s struggling to balance his chaotic personal life and career while the fate of millions of New Yorkers rest upon his shoulders.

Despite being awash with paramilitary criminal organisations, New York has never felt more toothless and dull. Dialogue has this odd faux-wholesome tone, like you’re trapped in a corporate training video—all careful politeness and empty one-liners. Even in emotional outbursts and tense confrontations, there’s no edge to anyone or any sense of an inner life. They’re so blandly nice it tips over into being unsettling—you keep getting that feeling like everyone’s waiting for you to leave so they can badmouth you behind your back. My hope for this sequel was that with the core action already perfected, there would be the space to improve on the wider formula, creating a more interesting New York playground. Instead, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 simply has more stuff—a bigger story, more pointless collectibles, sprawling skill trees, and double the Spider-Men.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is confirmed to be a PS5 exclusive, and fans will not be able to play the superhero game on previous-gen hardware or on any rival platforms at launch. PlayStation detailed the game’s system requirements on PC in a trailer and accompanying blog post. In addition to features like ray tracing and ultrawide monitor support, the PC version will also allow integrated use of the PS5’s DualSense controllers. Given that Insomniac’s Spider-Man games are among the few that have truly made use of the PS5’s advanced haptics, you’ll definitely want to use one of those controllers if you’re able to.
